Pourquoin't my NVMe drive show up during Windows 11 installer? What pilote is Windows looking for?

J’ai un Asus Pro B760M-CT-CSM business motherboard avec an Intel i7-12700K (12th Gen) Intel CPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and a Crucial 2TB P3 Plus NVMe SSD.

When I attempt to installer Windows 11 I get a écran asking me to installer a pilote so that Windows 11 can see my storage périphériques.

J’ai été all over the Internet trying to figure out what pilote Windows 11 is asking for. Crucial has a Windows pilote, but that appears to seulement be installable once Windows 11 a été installé.

What pilote is Windows asking for and where puis-je find it?

Après days of research I happened to stumble upon an Asus FAQ that contained the answer. When Intel launched their 11th Gen processors they contained a nouveau fonctionnalité called Volume Management Périphérique (“VMD”). VMD manages RAID and Optane storage configurations for 11th Gen and later Intel CPUs (see here). Parce que of this change, Windows 11 (and I’ve read that Windows 10 is également affected) cannot recognize NVMe SSDs that are installé in a système avec an Intel 11th Gen or later CPU during installation. Windows 11 needs an NVMe pilote that supports VMD (which the NVMe pilote that ships avec the Windows 11 installation ISO ne support). The pilote that Windows 11 is looking for is the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (“IRST”) pilote that supports VMD in 11th Gen and later Intel CPUs.

Avant we get vers le IRST pilote, it is CRITICAL that you désactiver the VMD controller in your BIOS. I’ve read that some motherboards can keep the VMD controller activé and Windows 11 will encore installer, but the majority du people who have encountered this problème say that they had to DISABLE the VMD controller via their BIOS. You must désactiver your VMD controller avant you installez le IRST pilote.

Your motherboard manufacturer should have the latest version of this pilote disponible dans le “Drivers & Downloads” section duir Support web page. You must use the pilote supplied by your motherboard manufacturer - not Intel’s - parce que your motherboard manufacturer may have modified the Intel pilote to do specific things sur leir motherboard. Vous allez need to télécharger and extract your motherboard manufacturer’s IRST drive to your Windows 11 installation media (usually a USB drive). Avec my Asus Pro B760M-CT-CSM motherboard, the extracted fichiers contained a dossier named “Drivers” ensuite a sub-dossier named “64bit.” C’est le dossier I navigated to when I received the Windows 11 “Missing Pilote” écran. Be sure to UNCHECK the checkbox labeled, “Hide pilotes that ne sont pas compatible avec this ordinateur’s matériel” located beneath the window! THIS WILL DISPLAY THE LIST OF INTEL IRST DRIVERS THAT YOU CAN USE. Sélectionnez the “09AB” drive for maximum compatibility avec Intel’s VMD management tools.

If tout a fonctionné properly, Windows 11 will continue its installation. At some point during installation vous allez be asked where you want to installer Windows 11. Your NVMe drive should maintenant be visible.
