HP Scanjet Pro 3000 S3 stops working après redémarrage on Windows 11 24H2 - persistent problème since December

Because Windows 10 Support Ends in October of this year, I replaced a Window 10 User’s computer with one compatible with Windows 11 on December 15th 2024.

Ever since then, he’s had a terrible experience with his HP Scanjet Pro 3000 S3 scanner. While we can typically get it working for a session, our efforts never survive a reboot.

Scanner: HP Scanjet Pro 3000 S3

HP’s Latest Scanner Driver for Windows 11 was released on Sep 16, 2022:

Computer: Beelink SER5 Pro 5850U

Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (Version 24H2, OS build 26100.3194, installed on 12/15/2024)

As you can see, this has been a known issue for quite some time, and still, HP has not released a driver update to fix this. HP is about to lose a very loyal customer, because if I have to purchase another scanner to address this issue, it won’t be an HP.

I’d like to give HP one more opportunity to resolved this. I’ll be calling them when support hours open this morning. However, I’m posting this here in hopes that someone in this community happens to know of a reliable work-around. I realize it is a long-shot that someone here has fixed this exact problem with this exact scanner, but I’ve tried everything suggested in the links above, and nothing that works survives a reboot.

Here is a possible workaround for the issue.

There have been numerous issues with 24H2, as listed by Microsoft, by ZDNET, by heise, by techradar, by xda and elsewhere.

However, one can run a virtual machine (VM) under 24H2, such as Oracle VirtualBox (VB) and alternatives. Some, such as VB, are free for personal use. One can download the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and use it to make a Win 10 virtual machine running on that PC.

The Windows 10 VM can be used to print from a USB-connected printer. or from a network-connected printer, or from a WiFi-connected printer. Another choice would be a Linux VM.

Admittedly, I do not know if this will work going through Windows 24H2, but it’s worth a try, rather than forcing said user to buy another printer. BTW, I’m using Windows 10 on this PC, dual-booted with Linux, and both are able to access all my hardware. Since I support six PC’s that are all working well but unable to run Win 11, it’s an easy decision to drop Win 10, at EOL, in favor of Linux.
