Just a little background Je suis a fairly young I.T. Tech working in a school seulement et seulement been working in le as a technician for a peu de years so I would encore consider myself a "newbie"

Anyway, My boss recently (Friday) increased our DHCP scope et aussi increased le lease time to 1 year.

Now for certains reason Increasing to a year seems wrong bien que Je ne peux pas put mon finger on why, there n'est pas tout real chance of us running out of IP's et Je sais c'est considered best to have votre lease time as long as possible sans running out of IP's mais a year is ringing alarm bells avec me.

The schools pretty up to date, gig switches, fibre to cabinets, 800 PC's 1800 users. I will say this I may have seulement been working in le industry for 4 years et mon premier job was basically fixing printers et headsets in a call centre mais J'ai been here 2 years now et I probably ne devrait pas say this mais I really ne like mon bosses "style". His reasoning behind it is c'est a good idea ....... seriously thats tous I could get out of him. its pas anything to do avec our monitoring software ou anything like that.

Technically there is nothing wrong avec this lease time, especially si in le school le computers et devices on le network rarely change. Cependant, le general rule of thumb is that votre leases should be long enough to reduced network bandwidth et server load in le event that you have a large amount of devices who could potentially need leases.

So technically, no there is nothing wrong avec this, le system is designed to support it, mais depuis a usability et maintenance viewpoint it may get to be confusing et hard to maintain si you have to eventually go in an kill old leases quand machines come ou go. Especially si you want to make tout network changes within a year as well.

In le past J'ai typically stuck to lease times of about a day mais no more than a week. It really n'est pas that much load et a properly loaded DHCP server ou servers should be able to handle that load juste fine.
